Make a Difference:
Become a Literacy Tutor

If you can
read, you can help someone else learn to read.
If you can
speak English, you can help someone else learn to speak English.
LVA Literacy Unlimited needs volunteers to do one-on-one tutoring with adult immigrants who wish to learn English (ESL) and native speakers who need to learn how to read and write (Basic Literacy). Later in the spring we will be holding both ESL and Basic Literacy training for people who are interested. You need to be at least a high school graduate, have a good command of spoken and written English, and be patient. No foreign language is needed to teach ESL.
If you’re interested in becoming
a tutor in the Literacy Unlimited program, here’s a checklist of our
requirements.
-
Visit, call, or email our office to sign up for tutor
training. These workshops are regularly scheduled at various times
throughout the year. Attendance
at six training sessions, totaling
approximately 18 hours is required.
-
You must agree to tutor your student two hours per week
for a minimum of one year.
-
Tutors must submit monthly reports of hours to the Literacy
Unlimited office.
-
You must have a high school diploma or equivalent to
qualify to become a tutor.
-
To tutor English as a Second Language you need to
speak English clearly and fluently. If you are a non-native speaker,
you should score at least 9 on the BEST Plus Test of English.
